Reflection
1. My project is a clay sculpture of a skull and anchor. I used clay and glaze, and it took me about 3 hours a night, plus the time in class to create and get the size and dementions right, and to get it to look how i wanted it to look.
2. The good/strong parts of my project are definitley the shape and sculpting of the clay. I made it so exact that when was finished, the jaw bone could actually fit into the skull. It's done well because I spent the most time on those parts.
3. The thing I could've done better would definitely have to be my glazing. Because I only had a day to glaze, I did it quickly and really wished i woud've painted it so I could've taken my time and not gotten it so messy.
4. The theme of my project is the quote "They hold us down like anchors, they drown us out at sea." The unity is it's all things to do with the sea or the thought of being held down by a hypothetical "anchor." The deeper meaning of this project is that I made it for a friend who uses that quote as kind of inspiration to not fall victim to people who put you down. The details that reflect the theme are mostly the anchor and the skull.
5. The important element in my project is probably form. All my shapes are 3D and I made sure to try and make them look as realistic as possible. The other one that came to mind was color. I tried to make the skull and jaw stand out by using dark colors all around it.
6. The important principle in my project is contrast. The skull was painted a lighter color so it would stand out among the dark anchor and waves. The other one that I thought of was emphasis. I made the anchor big so it would stick out on account that it's actually mentioned in the quote.
7. Things I learned from this project that I could apply to outside life would have to be that time does pay off. I spent so many hours sculpting to make it perfect in my eyes, and i'm very happy with it. Even though it was hard, I'm really happy with the results.
8. The first thing I did in this project was sculpt the skull. After i got it to a point in which I liked it, I sculped the base so as I went along I could assemble everything. After that, I made the jaw. It look awhile as well, because my goal was to get the demensions as close to perfect as I could so I could attach the jaw to the skull if I wanted to. After that, I assembled them to the base. Then, I started crafting the anchor. It was bigger and had alot of pieces that would shift shape, so it was definitley the most frusterating. I thought I was going to be done after that, but I decided to add waves on it at the end. When It was all assembled, I carved the quote on the front of the base.
9. Yes, It all was mostly planned, but I added a couple things on at the end. I actually drew a design out the day before we even started, because I had the idea of what I wanted to do.
10. Yes, I believe this was a very worthwhile project. It was really exciting to have a project to do where I could choose my materials and do whatever I wanted. I will probably be doing more clay for my next project. I really like that and consider it my favorite medium.
