I chose Salvador Dali for my painter. He has always been my favorite, and I enjoy almost all his work. He also had one of the most amazing mustaches I have ever seen! Anyway, Dali was born May 11th, 1904 in Columbia. He had a sister, and a brother who had died nine months before Salvador was born. His parents often told Salvador that they considered him his brother's reincarnation, and this is an idea he actually started to believe, for he painted his brother's likeness into many of his paintings. He married a women named Gala, who became his muse. He painted her often. Eventually though, Gala became Senile, and often mixed medacines into Dali's drinks. The result left him gravely ill, and he too began to lose his mind. After Gala passed away, Dali lost the will to live. He wouldn't eat or drink anything, and many people took this as a suicide attempt. He died January 23, 1989 from heart failure at the age of 84. His memory relives itself in his many drawings and paintings.
Works:
The Persistance of Memory
Dali's "The Persistance of Memory" was painted in 1931, and currently resides at the museum of modern art in New York. It it my all time favorite painting.
The Swallow's Tail
"The Swallow's Tail" was painted in 1983, and was Dali's last painting before he died. It is located in the Dali Theatre and museum. I really like the simpleness, but you can still somehow make out the swallow.
Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening
This painting was created in 1944. It is currently located in the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum in Madrid. I love all the aspects in this painting. It's almost entirely filled with fantasy.
The Temptation of St. Anthony
Dali painted "The temptation of St. Anthony in 1946. Its done with oil on canvas. The design of the horse really drew my attention to this painting, along with the long-legged elephants.
Apparatus and Hand
This painting, "Apparatus and Hand," was painted in 1927. The shapes in it are interestingly incorporated, and I had to stop and think as soon as I laid eyes on it.
Lady Atomica
Painted from the years 1947-1949. I like the detail of the swan alot. That's the first thing that really caight my eye. Just looking at it's feathers make me thing like I can actually touch it
The Elephants
"The Eleplants" was painted in 1948 and is in a private collection. It's oil on canvas. I realy like how Dali portrayed the elephants and gave them irregular body structure.
Summer Night
"Summer Night" was done with China ink and gouache on paper. I really like how there isn't much detail, but you can still make out the shapes and figure out what they are.
Sleep
Painted in 1937. The stilts holding up what seems to be a melting head makes this painting so interesting. Its unique, but somehow I like it.
Portrait of Dead Brother
Painted in 1963. Dali's parents often told him that he was the reincarnation of his dead brother, which is why he often painted his likeness. I like how even though the portrait isn't really fully painted, you can still make it out.
